Enamel is a traditional material used as far back as Ancient Egypt. Enamel is fused glass which has been applied as a coating on a surface, in this case sheet steel. At a temperature as high as 800°C, a very strong and corrosion-resistant protective layer is formed around the metal.

The production of enamel requires only iron, quartz, clay, feldspar, borax, soda and potash, all common mineral raw materials. No living creature has to suffer for its production and every enamel product is recyclable and also extremely durable. And the energy-consuming melting process is highly efficient thanks to current technologies.

Enamel is so durable that in theory an enamel soap dish can last indefinitely. Enamel creates a surface that is resistant to cuts, scratches, acids and alkalis. It is easy to keep clean and is antibacterial and hypoallergenic. Enamel is also food-safe as it is odourless and tasteless. Even with intensive use, there will hardly be any wear and tear thanks to the enamel.

So are there no drawbacks to enamel at all? Even though today's enamel soap dishes are much stronger than the enamel products from the past, there is always a risk that bits of enamel will crumble and improper handling can cause the enamel to flake off. Therefore, it is important not to drop the enamel soap dishes. If rust forms in damaged areas, it can be removed with a glass cleaning agent.

How to maintain
It is best to clean the enamel soap dish with a glass cleaner or normal dish soap. Cleaning with hot or very hot water is recommended, very cold water can crack the glass layer.

End of life
An enamelled soap dishes can last (more than) a lifetime, so there's no need to throw them away. If you still want to throw away the soap dish, you can simply dispose of it in the residual waste. As the soap dishes are only made of glass and sheet steel, they will automatically enter the recycling cycle.
