Participate in Earth Hour 2022
What is Earth Hour?
Every year, on the last Saturday of March between 20:30 and 21:30 (local time), people in over 190 countries take action to ensure a better future for people and planet. Join us this year, turn off the lights for one hour and tell your friends and family; the more people join the better!
Earth Hour was started in 2007 in Sydney by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) to raise awareness of climate change. People around the world were encouraged to turn off their lights to draw attention to climate change.
Now, in 2022, Earth Hour is one of the largest environmental movements in the world. And that’s a good thing, because more than a decade later, the climate crisis continues, compounded by another urgent threat: the rapid loss of biodiversity and our nature.
Earth Hour aims to raise awareness and spark global conversations about protecting nature, tackling the climate crisis, and working together to create a better future for all.
Turn off the lights
Not sure what to do after you turn out the lights? Earth Hour shares 7 tips to make it an impactful night with family, friends or the community.
- Reconnect with nature - nature is essential to our health and happiness. Take your family and friends outside and explore the beach or park after dark or maybe even do some stargazing!
- Cook a delicious dinner - Candlelight dinners aren't just for Valentine's Day. Invite your friends and family over for a dinner in the dark.
- Spend time with your loved ones - don't feel like cooking or going out? You can also just plan a cozy evening and play board games, listen to music or dance the night away together.
- Get educated - awareness is the first step before you can take action. Use Earth Hour to learn more about our beautiful planet, the challenges we face and the opportunities we have to turn the tide.
- Connect with your community - go to a local Earth Hour Netherlands event or find other organizations and initiatives where you can volunteer.
- Get a workout - we can't take care of others and the planet until we take care of ourselves. So use this hour to get moving and sweating, go for a night bike ride or put on your favorite playlist and dance in the dark. Or opt for a soothing candlelit yoga session.
- Discover your creative self - if you don't feel like working on your body, work on your creative mind during this evening! Try taking beautiful pictures in the dark, paint, or upcycle something you have lying around the house.
