Why use natural lip balm?

What ingredients are (not) in natural lip balm?
Non-natural lip balms often contain substances that are potentially carcinogenic or hormone disrupting. The potentially carcinogenic substances are found in mineral oils and are called MOSH and MOAH. These are abbreviations for two types of hydrocarbons. These two substances are not listed on the label of your lip balm, but it is best to avoid these ingredients:

- Ceresin (Hydrogenated)
- Microcrystalline wax (Hydrogenated)
- Polyisobutene
- Mineral oil
- Ozokerite
- Paraffinum (liquidum)
- Petrolatum
- Polyethylene
- Polybutene
The hormone disruptors are EDCs and can cause fertility problems, obesity or cardiovascular diseases in the long term. Preferably choose a lip balm without:
- Ethylhexyl methoxycinnamate
- BHT
- Benzyl salicylate
- Benzophenone-3
In addition, many non-natural lip balms contain water. Water may sound innocent, but water dries out your skin, making you want to use lip balm over and over again.
So what ingredients are safe and will you find in natural lip balms? These are usually lip balms based on natural butters and oils such as shea butter, almond oil, olive oil or coconut oil.

At Zo Zero you will also not find lip balm made from Vaseline. Vaseline is a by-product of petroleum / oil (just like gasoline and diesel). The Vaseline that is often used for skin and lip products is purified, but it remains a residual product of petroleum and who wants that on their lips!?
Besides the fact that Vaseline is a by-product of petroleum, your lips can also become addicted to it. By using Vaseline, your own skin becomes lazy and produces less and less fat. You then have to use more and more Vaseline, which puts you in a vicious circle. Did you want to use the lip balm to combat dry lips? That works in the short term, but in the long term Vaseline dries out your lips and you need more and more lip balm. For these reasons, you will not find lip balms based on Vaseline at Zo Zero.
