These classic enamel soap dishes are not only stylish, but also incredibly practical. The removable grid with water drainage holes ensures that you can store each soap bar dry and the base ensures that no soap residue leaks onto your countertop. The soap residue that collects in the drip tray can easily be used to make a soapy solution.
Enamel is a traditional material that was already used in ancient Egypt. Enamel is molten glass that is applied as a coating to a carrier, in this case sheet steel. At a temperature of more than 800°C, a very strong and corrosion-resistant protective layer is formed on the metal.
For the production of enamel, only iron, quartz, clay, feldspar, borax, soda and potash are needed, all common mineral raw materials. No living being has to suffer for its production and every enamel product is recyclable and also extremely sustainable. The energy-consuming smelting process is very efficient thanks to current technologies.
Enamel is so durable that the enamel soap dishes will theoretically last indefinitely. Enamel creates a surface that is resistant to cuts, scratches, acids and alkalis. It is easy to keep clean and is antibacterial and hypoallergenic. Enamel is also food safe, because it is odourless and tasteless. Even with intensive use, there will be hardly any wear thanks to the glaze.
Are there no disadvantages at all? Although today's enamel soap dishes are much stronger than the enamel products of the past, there is always a risk that pieces of enamel will chip off and incorrect treatment can cause the glaze to flake off. That is why it is important not to drop the enamel soap dishes. If rust forms on damaged areas, this can be removed with glass cleaner.
Maintenance
The enamel soap dish is best cleaned with a glass cleaner or a normal dishwashing liquid. Cleaning under hot or very warm water is recommended, very cold water can crack the glass layer.
End of life
In principle, the enamel soap dishes last (more than) a lifetime and therefore do not need to be thrown away. If you do want to throw away the soap dish, you can simply put it in the residual waste. Because the soap dishes consist only of glass and sheet steel, they automatically end up in the recycling cycle.
