What is a natural shampoo bar?

A natural shampoo bar is shampoo that is solid instead of liquid. A shampoo bar is packaged in a cardboard container, so you can say goodbye to countless plastic bottles every year. Shampoo bars usually contain natural plant-based oils, coconut butters and essential oils. Plastic-free shampoo bars look like a block of soap like your grandma used to have, but they contain all nourishing ingredients a shampoo needs and the lather is just as good as regular shampoo. Shampoo bars, like regular shampoo, are available for different hair types. These zero waste shampoo bars are the perfect replacement for conventional shampoo in a plastic bottle.

What is the difference between shampoo bars and hair soap?

Shampoo bars come in many different shapes and sizes and are often referred to as hair soap. But beware: shampoo should not contain soap, because soap can be harmful to your hair. Soap often has a pH value of 9 to 10 and is therefore alkaline. Our skin, on the other hand, is slightly acid with a pH value of around 4.5 to 5.5.

Hair soap can therefore cause the pH level of your hair to become unbalanced. Soap can strip away the natural oils that protect your hair, leaving it feeling dull, dry and tangled after washing. So not all shampoo bars that are zero waste, natural and vegan are necessarily good for your hair. Which ingredients should you avoid? These ingredients, among others, indicate that you are dealing with hair soap rather than a natural shampoo bar and are therefore best avoided:

  • Sodium Cocoate
  • Sodium Olivate
  • Sodium Castorate
  • Sodium Hydroxide

What ingredients are (not) in a zero waste shampoo bar?

All the shampoo bars you will find at Zo Zero contain natural ingredients. Normal shampoos (but also many shampoo bars) contain aggressive ingredients such as SLS or SLES. SLS strips your hair and skin of its natural oils, leaving your hair and skin extremely dry. Each shampoo bar has its own active ingredients, but none contain ingredients that are harmful to your hair.

None of our shampoo bars contain animal ingredients or have been tested on animals and, of course, all our vegan shampoo bars are free from microplastics, palm oil and sulphates.

Do I want Sodium Coco-Sulfate in my shampoo bar?

Many natural shampoo bars contain sodium coco-sulphate as a replacement for SLS. Sodium coco-sulfate is a mild tenside made from plant lauric acid and sodium. Chemically, both ingredients belong to the same family and both ingredients are relatively cheap, which is why they are used so often. Both SLS and sodium coco-sulfate are derived from coconut fatty acids, but the big difference is in their aggressiveness. Sodium coco-sulfate is a lot milder than SLS, but it is still a sulphate that we would rather not have in our hair. Sulfates are just too good at cleaning your hair and stripping it of its natural oils. This can cause your scalp to become dry and irritated.

That is why all shampoo bars on our website are free of sodium coco-sulphate.

How do you use a shampoo bar?

Frankly, washing your hair with a shampoo bar is very simple. You first have to wet your hair and the shampoo bar before applying the natural shampoo to your hair. You can do this by rubbing the shampoo bar between your hands and then applying it or by rubbing it directly into your wet hair. After that, the plastic-free shampoo works exactly the same as conventional shampoo in a plastic bottle. Massage the shampoo in and rinse your hair thoroughly.

To make the shampoo bar last longer, let it dry well after each use, preferably in a dry place outside the shower.

Do you need a shampoo bar as well as conditioner?

The answer to this is very personal. Some people like to use a natural conditioner because it makes their hair very soft. Others do not like to use conditioner so that their hair retains more volume.

What are the benefits of a shampoo bar?

  • A shampoo bar is plastic-free and therefore more environmentally friendly than conventional shampoo
  • Shampoo bars last much longer than normal shampoo which is good for your wallet
  • You quit paying for water, one of the standard ingredients in conventional shampoo
  • Shampoo bars contain only natural ingredients
  • Shampoo bars take up much less room, both in your shower and in your beauty case
  • You can easily carry shampoo bars in your hand luggage because it is not a liquid
  • This way, there is no risk of leaking or exploding bottles in your bag

What is the best shampoo bar for you?

Looking for the best vegan shampoo bar for your hair? At Zo Zero, you will find shampoo bars for different hair types, from normal to dry hair to oily and fine hair and from curly hair to people with sensitive scalps. You will also find shampoo bars with calendula, aloe vera and even banana. Now you probably think: banana? That's right! It may seem like a strange idea, but the shampoo bar smells great and quickly became my favourite.

Are your shampoo bars Curly Girl proof?

Chey Ciana, the founder of Chey Haircare, has beautiful curls. For this reason, she only developed products that comply with the Curly Girl method. Also, the 2in1 shampoo + conditioner from Zero Waste Path is Curly Girl proof. Check this page for all products that comply with the Curly Girl method.

Which shampoo bars won't you find at Zo Zero?

As mentioned above, not all shampoo bars contain only good ingredients. Soap can be harmful to your hair and many brands use sodium coco-sulfate in their shampoo bars and we at Zo Zero are no fans of sulfates.

For this reason, we do not sell HappySoaps shampoo bars. We are often asked why we do not sell shampoo bars by HappySoaps, but the answer is quite simple: we only sell vegan shampoo bars without sulphates and that is not the case with Happy Soaps. As long as HappySoaps continues to add sodium coco-sulphate to its shampoo bars, we will unfortunately not be able to sell them. Fortunately, we have a lot of other shampoo bars that do not contain sulphates.
