Silicone lids are an environmentally friendly alternative to cling film and aluminium foil. You put the fresh food cover on a bowl, jar, can or directly on a piece of fruit or vegetable to ensure that it stays fresh longer and you can store it longer. You can reuse silicone lids over and over again, saving you a lot of waste. The lids ensure that you can store food and drinks airtight, so that in addition to less plastic waste, you also ensure less food waste. And that is not only good for the environment, but also for your wallet.
Silicone is sometimes confused with plastic, but silicone is without a doubt a lot healthier for your body than plastic. Plastic is made from petroleum and often contains chemicals, such as Bisphenol A (BPA), that can be harmful to your health. Substitutes for BPA in products labeled as BPA-free are often just as harmful (or even more harmful) than BPA itself. All silicone lids at Zo Zero are made of food-safe silicone without toxic chemicals such as BPA.
Also for the environment, silicone is not the same as plastic. Silicone is made of silica and oxygen, which is a lot more sustainable than plastic and therefore better for our oceans. Silicone is a virtually unbreakable material and can withstand extreme temperature changes without melting, cracking or otherwise breaking down. Therefore, there is a much smaller risk of small microparticles (as is the case with microplastics) ending up in the environment.
Finally, silicone lids can be used much longer than a comparable piece of plastic. And if you are still not convinced; silicone is odour and stain resistant, it is hygienic and hypoallergenic and has no open pores for bacteria to grow in. Silicone is therefore the perfect material for lids that you can use for decades.
Silicone freshness lids are very simple to use. You can easily place a cut piece of fruit or vegetables in the silicone lid or you can easily pull the lid over a bowl or pan. Try to get as much air out from under the lid as possible by lifting the edge of the lid and pressing the center of the lid down with your palm.
It is recommended to always keep cut vegetables and fruit in the refrigerator, so that they can be kept as long as possible. Even products, such as tomatoes and lemons, that you might normally keep outside of the refrigerator, are best kept in the refrigerator once they have been cut.
In addition, silicone lids are easy to clean. You can simply put the silicone lids in the dishwasher or rinse them under the tap. A big advantage of silicone lids is that they hardly absorb odours. If your sliicone lid has taken up an unpleasant odor, it is best to 'bake the odour out of the silicone'. Place your silicone lid in the oven for 20 minutes and the heat will make sure the nasty odours disappear.
